Vivono nei chum, è il nome delle loro tende fatte di pelli di renna, che smontano e rimontano durante le migrazioni alla ricerca di muschi e licheni di cui le renne si nutrono. Anche se molti di loro portano avanti antiche tradizioni, anno dopo anno sono sempre meno quelli decidono di rimanere.
I giovani che hanno la possibilità di studiare in città, difficilmente sentono la mancanza di tornare a vivere nella tundra.
Oltre questo, la pioggia abbondante, causata dal riscaldamento globale, con arrivo dell’inverno ghiaccia creando uno spesso strato di ghiaccio impedendo alle renne di nutrirsi dei licheni, portando alla morte le renne. Un altro fattore minaccia i Nenets, lo sviluppo economico, dovuto all’estrazione del gas (in questa Penisola viene estratto 1/3 del gas di tutta la Russia). Tutti questi problemi costringono i Nenets a cambiare le rotte di migrazione e comportano ad una vita ancora più difficile se non la scomparsa di questo popolo nomade.
One of the most inhospitable places on earth for its extreme weather conditions is Siberia, where temperatures can drop below -40 degrees. Exactly in the Yamal Peninsula, in this frozen wasteland, over a thousand years ago Nenets settled, reindeer herders, leading a nomadic life to the limit of the bearable. Nenets live in the chum, which is the name of their reindeer skin tents, that they disassemble and reassemble during migrations looking for mosses and lichens which reindeer feed on. Although many of them carry on ancient traditions, over the years fewer and fewer decide to stay. Young people who have the opportunity to study in the city, hardly miss to return to live in the tundra. Beyond this, the abundant rain, caused by global warming, with the arrival of winter freezes creating a thick layer of ice preventing reindeer from feeding on lichens, leading to the death reindeers. Another factor threatens Nenets, the economic development, due to the gas extraction (1/3 of the gas from all Russia is extracted in this Peninsula). All these problems force Nenets to change migration routes and lead to an even more difficult life if not to the disappearance of this nomadic people.
